comparing the two devices
From comparing the two mobile consoles, I have noticed that they both have similar features but there are a few differences, the main difference is that the N-Gage is a mobile phone as well as a gaming device, whereas the PSP is simply a gaming device.
The PSP has more internal memory than the N-Gage, which means that more games can be stored and played on the PSP than the N-Gage, but the N-gage also has the optional at an extra cost to use an MMC card as external memory.
The PSP has games, which are stored on a UMD (Universal Media Disc) instead of having to download games like on the N-Gage. Am not sure weather this is a good or bad thing, depending on the prices of PSP games, which hasn’t been confirmed yet, buying the games is easier than having to scroll though loads of menu on wap to find the game you want to download. I personally would prefer to go into a shop to buy the game because I hate the wap on my phone, it takes forever and I can never find what I want.
Overall the PSP seems to be a better device because it also has a UMD drive, which offers the user a broad range of digital entertainment, such as music video clips, movies and sports programmes. The N-Gage doesn’t have these facities, on the old N-Gage, which isn’t as well designed as this one; it has a FM radio and can play MP3’s. Although the reviews on the playstation playing DVD’s says that:
“The PSP isn't just a game device of course - it's designed as a portable media system, and Sony will be pushing for music and movies to also be released in UMD format. Movies on UMD will retail at a price "less than a DVD", which is just as well when you consider that UMD discs will almost certainly not be able to store video of the same quality as DVDs. Music may also be released on UMD at prices lower than normal CD prices.” (Quote from: http://www.playstationportable.com/)
The N-Gage does have some features which seem to be more appealing to the gamer are that the N-Gage is a phone as well as a gaming device, as most people take there mobile everywhere it means that they can play games wherever they go. As well as being able to get new games whenever and wherever you want, by downloading them off wap.
I think that the best device to be the platform for my game would be the playstation portable, I think it has the best selling advantage, because the playstation portable will be new and people will properly go on buying friezes. Also it has some really good features, like that it plays MP3’s and video clips, I think this will appeal to a lot of people because it is not just a gaming device. Whereas the N-Gage might appeal to certain people because it is a phone and a gaming device, but most people like their phone to be small, so the N-Gage will not appeal to these people.

Design exercise (week 3)
In the studio session this week we had to bring in a newspaper article that dates back to pre-1984. We then had to get into groups and decide which article was the best to use for this project. For the project we had to produce a storyboard to illustrate the selected news story, as if it was a level of a game making sure they reflected continuity from the previous level. We had to break down the story into key elements, and locations, and research theses areas.
We produced a presentation for our project using PowerPoint, below are the items we included on the slides.
The main points of the article.
- The Army are using public money to supply them selves with food.
Soldiers are allowed certain ‘luxuries’. - The prices are higher and the quality of food different for the normal man on the street, than what the army gets.
- Canteens all over England are filled with tinned and bottled goods, which have deteriorated with age and are worthless.
- All food is rationed, so people need to steal food.Wholesalers making huge amounts of profits, because they are selling their food for large amounts, which means that not everyone can afford to eat.
Research:
- Guns: which types where used in 1917?
- War games: research what war games are like now.
- War games: research what war games are like now.
Guns:
- Guns don’t kill people, rappers do, they big n they pointy, n they gonna shoot you.
- Guns are bad. Very very bad. Really really very bad.

The character collects coupons as he does the missions, the object is to collect as many as possible in a set amount of time. Depending on the amount of coupons collected determines how much food the character gets. The character needs a set amount of food to live, so if the user fails the mission the health of the character goes down.
- The character has weapons to defend him self from mad killing machines named arkwright and grandvil.
Idea 2:
- The idea of this game is to make the best food.
- The character has to run round the town looking for the ingredients to make their meal; the object of the game is making a good meal. This meal is then fed to the soldiers who decide how good your food is.

Different types of games:
- Adventure games: This is often the most popular with gamers; these games usually consist of levels, with lots of characters. The basic of these games is usually consists of the character collecting items to get to different levels. Some examples of these games are, Simpsons hit and run, Mario 64.
- Fighting games: These games are often easy to play but difficult to master, and as the player goes thought the levels often game play gets much harder. In this games the gamer usually has to battle with other character to advance to the next level. These games usually involve fighting without weapons. Check out this link: game
- Racing games: These games started in arcades called pole position and evolved from there. There are different types of racing games, some are simple ones were you have to beat the computer or other players to the finish. Others are were you have a career and have lots of races, you have to spend money to better your car and win more races, an example of this is Gran Turismo. Other examples of racing games are, Burn out 3, Rally Fusion, Ford Racing.
- First person shooting games: This is a new type of game because the technology has advanced now so the games can be made. This game combines action shooting and adventure, it is classed as first person because you look through the characters eyes, and usually the character is carrying to shoot its enemies. Some examples of these games are Doom, Golden eye and Call of duty.
- Puzzle games: These are a very old type of games; these games usually don’t involve a plot, or many characters. Basically these games test your skills, speed and eye co-ordination. To go up a level the user usually has to reach a high score to proceed. Examples of this game are Tetris, Ultimate mind games, and Trivial Pursuit.
- Sports games: Nearly every sport imaginable has been created in to a game from football to tennis. Probably the most popular of the sports games are football ones, these allow the user to control the players so they can win games, but to win the user has to learn certain skills to beat the computer. On some of the games there is also a chance to play two-player mode and play in a league against the computer. More recently there has been an increase in the sales of more extreme sports games, such as Tony Hawk pro skater, which consists of death defying stunts. Sports games have been getting better and better over the years, which include better graphics which makes play more realistic.
TOY project
We have to research, design and prototype a digital toy which can fit into your pocket. You need to choose an existing mobile device as the toy platform, so that it will fit into your pocket.
What is a toy? A board game, a playstaion game, my with blue tac, almost anything can be classed as a toy if you make a game out of it. You can make games out of games, the original monopoly can be played as the rules say or you can invent your own rules, which makes it a new game.
How do we control/input data into different mobile devices?
The games below illustrate what sort of games are available to play on a mobile device such as the mobile phone. Theses are just a few of the games, which can be downloaded from the Internet, or by using wap on your phone. There are al sorts of games, which are available such as football or rally games, but old-school games like Tetris, pacman and pong are also available.

Computer game graphics, characters and environments are influenced by the limitations of the display, colour, size and resolution. The project is supposed to encourage visual creativity within the limitations of the canvas.

monopoly
“The most commonly known story of the invention of Monopoly centers around Charles Darrow, an unemployed engineer from Germantown, Pennsylvania. As the legend goes, Darrow created the game on an oil cloth on his kitchen table, all the while dreaming of fame, fortune, and summers spent on the Jersey shore, which explains the game's Atlantic City street names. It is true that Charles Darrow presented the game to Parker Brothers in 1934, but was turned down because the company felt the game, which they said had "fifty-two fundamental design errors," was too complicated and would take too long to play. In 1935, after Darrow had some success selling the game on his own, Parker Brothers reconsidered and bought the rights to Monopoly for an undisclosed sum.
Most people don't know, however, that Monopoly is related very closely to a game called The Landlord's Game which was created and patented in 1904 by Elizabeth (Lizzie) J. Magie, from Virginia. Magie developed the game, which, like Monopoly, had forty spaces, four railroads, two utilities, twenty-two rental properties, and spaces for Jail, Go to Jail, Luxury Tax, and Parking, as a way to teach the single-tax theory. Magie, a Quaker, was a firm believer in the single-tax theory's basic tenet, that a person's taxes should be based on the amount of land that he owned, a popular idea around the turn of the century.
The game spread through word of mouth. Rules were relayed from one group of friends to another and boards and game pieces were homemade. It is believed that Magie's game may have even found its way to the University of Pennsylvania economics department, as well as the campuses of Princeton and Harvard. Magie kept up with the changes that wider play made in her game, by adapting the rules to allow improving properties, naming the properties, and giving players higher rents if they owned a monopoly. In 1924, Magie attempted to interest George Parker in purchasing the rights to her improved game, but was turned town on the basis that her game was too political. Although there is much speculation about how Darrow happened upon the idea for his game, it is no myth that Monopoly has enjoyed tremendous success since its 1935 Toy Fair debut. Approximately 100 million games have been sold, making it one of the best-selling games in the world. It is sold in more than eighty countries and has been translated into twenty-six languages, including Braille. “

Barbie dolls
"Barbie was first introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York in February 1959. She was created by Elliot Handler, the founder of Mattel, Inc., and his wife, Ruth. The doll was named after the Handlers' daughter, Barbie. Ken is the name of the couple's son. The doll's womanly figure and painted face got mixed reviews—few would have guessed that more than thirty-five years later Barbie would still be one of the most successful and enduring toys on the market.
Over half a billion Barbies—over one billion if sales of her sidekick dolls (like Ken and Skipper) are included--have been sold in more than one hundred and forty countries. Each week, Mattel sells over 1.5 million dolls—that's two dolls per second. Ninety percent of all American girls in the last forty years have owned at least one Barbie. If every Barbie doll ever manufactured were laid end to end, they would circle the earth three-and-one-half times.
Over the years, Barbie's voluptuous figure has sparked controversy. If she were human, her measurements would translate into a thirty-nine inch chest, twenty-one inch waist, and thirty-three inch hips.
Mattel's in-house designers provide the ever-fashionable doll with about a hundred new outfits each year. Clothing has also been created for Barbie by world-famous designers Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Valentino, Perry Ellis, Oscar de la Renta, and Bob Mackie. Since 1959, over 105 million yards of fabric have been used to create Barbie's clothes, making Mattel a huge consumer of cloth, as well as America's fourth largest maker of women's clothes.
Mattel has given Barbie many different careers during her run as one of the world's most popular toys. She has been a teacher, astronaut, veterinarian, soldier, singer, flight attendant, and model. Barbie also keeps up with the latest technology—she got her first computer in 1985 "

Games
We have been given a project to look at toys, we have to consider the nature of play. What is a toy? How do we control/input data into different mobile devices? What display sizes/proportions are available?what sort of mobile devices are available to play games on?
Games of tomorrow
The games that we used to play with when we were young are a great deal different to what the children and adults play with today. I used to play with teddies, Barbie and the odd board game. But as I grew up the games industrity was taking off in a big way, playstations, Nintendo games were a big hit, I personally had a gameboy when I was younger to play with in the car. But today there are loads of mobile devices to play the thousands of games that have been created for these platforms.
It is estimated that electronic game devices are to increase five-fold to 2.6 billion by 2010, this is due to the progress in processing power, network bandwidth and storage capacity.

The Blob
In week one of the studio session we were given a brief were we had to create a toy or a game which hasn't already been invented, we were put into groups of four of five and together we had to come up with a design concept as well as storyboards to illustrate our idea. In our group we came up with a few ideas but the one we decided on was The Blob, this is more of a toy than a game. The blob is a round ball of malleable rubber like plastic, which can be easily moulded in to different shapes. The Blob can be made into people, cars, trees and animals. Loads of different versions of the Blob are available, there are special packets, which you can buy to create different things, such as a car, and this pack would contain wheels and bumper, which can be easily attracted to the Blob. The Blob can also be bought in every colour imaginable, but if you have a Blob in a colour you don’t like you can buy the special liquid, which you apply, to the Blob to change its colour. The Blob can be moulded into any shape and re-moulded over and over again; if you want the Blob to stay in a certain shape forever you can put the blob in the oven to set the shape.
We illustrated this idea to the rest of the group using blue tac, see the picture below:(picture to appear shortly)
